Chestnut honey is the “champagne” of local honeys, and I have heard local epicures (or ‘apicures’ – haha) declaring with pride “I only eat Chestnut Honey!” The month of October sees much of the population of Tropoja out in force, occupying the vast chestnut forests around Markaj – which I have seen called “The Tropojan Chestnut Massif” online. Families throw up little lean-tos and light campfires starting at 5 am, to maximize the furious days of the chestnut harvest.
